Fighting to be the ring leader

Ultimate Fighting Championship has withstood a lot of hits and now is ready for a staredown with boxing and wrestling

When Chuck Liddell first fought in an Ultimate Fighting Championship octagon, he was a 28-year-old bartender with backgrounds in amateur wrestling and karate and a fervent hunger to scrape out a living doing what he loved -- fighting.

Eight years later, Liddell is the face of the country's fastest-growing combat sport. He's a millionaire. He endorses exercise supplements on cable television. His angular visage, adorned with tattoos and topped by a tightly cropped mohawk, is known to thousands upon thousands of men, ages 18 to 34. And when he walks out for his next fight at the end of August, those men will pay handsomely -- whether $700 for a ringside seat in Las Vegas or $39.95 to tune in from their couches -- to watch his fists fly.

Beer ingredient may fight prostate cancer

I love being able to feel good about partaking in all my bad habits - Shane

A main ingredient in beer may help prevent prostate cancer and enlargement, according to a new study. But researchers say don't rush out to stock the refrigerator because the ingredient is present in such small amounts that a person would have to drink more than 17 beers to benefit.

Oregon State University researchers say the compound xanthohumol, found in hops, inhibits a specific protein in the cells along the surface of the prostate gland.

The protein acts like a signal switch that turns on a variety of animal and human cancers, including prostate cancer.

Cancer typically results from uncontrolled cell reproduction and growth. Xanthohumol belongs to a group of plant compounds called flavonoids, which can trigger the programmed cell death that controls growth, researchers say.

Xanthohumol was first discovered in hops in 1913, but its health effects were not known until about 10 years ago, when it was first studied by Fred Stevens, assistant professor of medicinal chemistry at OSU's College of Pharmacy.

Last fall, Stevens published an update on xanthohumol in the journal Phytochemistry that drew international attention.

Stevens says it possible for drug companies to develop pills containing concentrated doses of the flavonoid found in the hops used to brew beer.

He also says researchers could work to increase the xanthohumol content of hops.

There are already a number of food supplements on the market containing hops, and scientists in Germany have developed a beer that contains 10 times the amount of xanthohumol as traditional brews. The drink is being marketed as a healthy beer, but research is still under way to determine if it has any effect against cancer.

The latest Oregon State University research was published in a recent issue of Cancer Letters.

Idol's Pickler Inks Record Deal

LOS ANGELES, July 18, 2006
(AP) Bubbly blonde "American Idol" finalist Kellie Pickler has landed a record deal with country label BNA Records and 19 Recordings, the label founded by "Idol" creator Simon Fuller.

First up for the 20-year-old North Carolina native, whom "Idol" judge Simon Cowell once deemed a "naughty little minx," will be a single scheduled for release in September. Her debut album will arrive Nov. 14.

"I've always dreamed of getting a record deal, so now my dream has come true!" Pickler said in a statement released Monday by Sony BMG, parent company of the Nashville-based BNA.

Pickler is currently on the "American Idols Live" cross-country tour and "will record the album in between tour dates," according to the statement.

Her twangy rendition of Patsy Cline's "Walkin' After Midnight" can be heard on the "American Idol: Season Five" compilation CD.

Other "Idol" alums signed to 19 Recordings include fellow season-five finalist Chris Daughtry and past winners Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia and Ruben Studdard.

Denny Hamlin wins the Pocono 500

Hamlin sweeps Pocono, races into Chase contention
By JENNA FRYER, AP Auto Racing Writer
July 24, 2006

NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin races his car in front of the pack as he heads into turn one during the Pennsylvania 500 at the Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa., Sunday, July 23, 2006. Hamlin won the race.

LONG POND, Pa. (AP) -- Denny Hamlin hardly had to use his rearview mirror at Pocono Raceway, where no one was ever close enough to catch him.

But if Hamlin had taken a peek, he might have gotten a glimpse of the chaos unfolding behind him.

Tony Stewart tangled with Clint Bowyer and Carl Edwards, leading to aggressive driving penalties for Stewart and Edwards and hot tempers all over the garage. It all overshadowed Hamlin's season sweep at Pocono.

It began very early in the race when Bowyer pinched Stewart into the wall. Stewart responded with a wave out his window, then his own bump of Bowyer's car. It sent Bowyer spinning into Carl Edwards and earned Stewart a one-lap penalty for aggressive driving.

A furious Edwards later drove alongside Stewart and raised his arms as if to ask ``what was that about?'' and Stewart responded with a one-fingered salute that infuriated Edwards. He spun Stewart out on pit road to earn his own penalty, and vowed over his radio to fight Stewart after the race.

``I've got to choose my words carefully -- if it weren't for the respect of the sport and the people watching and his team, he'd be out there bleeding right now,'' Edwards later fumed. ``That's so frustrating. How can a person make it this far in life being such a jerk?

``If you hold that guy up, like if he thinks you held him up, he gets so upset and then he can wreck two guys and give you the finger. That's spectacularly self-centered. I can't imagine being like that.''

Nascar Pennsylvania 500 Pocono

Hamlin wins pole for Pennsylvania 500
July 21, 2006

LONG POND, Pennsylvania (Ticker) - Pocono Raceway brings out the best in rookie Denny Hamlin.

Hamlin continued his success at the track Friday, winning the pole for the NASCAR Pennsylvania 500.

Driving a Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Hamlin circled the 2 1/2-mile raceway in 52.995 seconds, clocking at a top speed of 169.827 miles per hour. He used a similar formula in last month's Pocono 500, when he used winning the pole as a springboard to his first career victory.
